Originally from New York City, James pursued a career in cardiology because "the field of cardiology is always advancing, constantly moving toward the removal of this deadly disease. And I want to be a part of it".

Dr. Smalley is very active in the education of future physicians and holds the position of Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria.

In his spare time, Dr. Smalley is an avid sportsman and competitive shooter. He already competes in Trap and Cowboy Action Shooting.
He has three sons. Jason is a Lawyer in Intellectual Property in Chicago, Illinois. Matthew is working towards being an Agent for the National Security Division of the United States Treasury. Richard is proceeding towards a career in medicine.
