Born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago, Paul says he was drawn to cardiology by the "stimulation of problem-solving" and "being able to use a hands-on approach to help people."

In 1982, Paul received his M.D. from Rush Medical College in Chicago. He then completed an internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago. As a student he was elected a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and received the Cardiology Senior Student Award. He became the chief Cardiology Fellow and a member of the American College of Cardiology. After completing his Fellowship, he became a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.

Since joining HeartCare Midwest in 1987, Dr. Schmidt has been active in helping teach medical students and residents, serving as a clinical assistant professor at the University Of Illinois College Of Medicine at Peoria.

Paul and his wife, Cori, have one son, Daniel. In his free time, Paul enjoys mountain climbing, hiking, skiing, and running.
