James was born in Iowa Falls, Iowa, and moved around the United States until the age of ten, when his family settled again in the north-central part of their home state. While attending college at the University of Iowa, he found the coursework for the pre-med major the most interesting of all the available options, and so he decided to pursue medicine. The first time he saw cardiac surgery as a medical student, he knew it would become his specialty.

In his spare time, James enjoys restoring antique cars and rare or significant muscle cars.

Among the accomplishments of which he his most proud, Dr. Munns counts the establishment of a data monitoring system for cardiac surgery at both OSF Saint Francis Medical Center and Proctor Hospital. The information these systems provide has helped improve surgical outcomes.

Board Certifications

  • Thoracic and Cardiac surgery

Best part of job
Besides the people he works with, Dr. Munns says the best part of his job is seeing people return to the office as they recover and regain their health.
