A native Chicagoan, Donald's career almost took a totally different path. Following in the footsteps of his father, Donald started out in dental school. After two years, he realized the medical side was far more interesting to him. So he pursued and received his M.D. from the University of Illinois-Chicago in 1974. He went on to complete his internship, residency, and cardiology fellowship at the University Of Colorado Health Science Center.
Over the years, Dr. McElroy has earned many medical honors and has served in many distinguished leadership roles, including as president of the Illinois affiliate of the American Heart Association, president of the Proctor Hospital medical staff, and chair of Proctor Hospital Board of Directors. He's been a part of HeartCare Midwest since 1979 and is currently an assistant clinical professor of medicine at the University Of Illinois College Of Medicine at Peoria. He's also a member of the American College of Physicians.
Donald and his wife Julie have two children. In his free time, Donald enjoys traveling, photography, reading, and spending time with his family.
