Ryan was born and raised in Rabat, the capital city of Morocco. He recalls as far back as 1st grade answering the teacher’s question “what do you want to be when you grow up” with the same answer and without hesitation, “a physician.” Even at a young age he knew he wanted to do a job that could improve people’s lives and was always fascinated by the idea of saving a life.
Upon completion of medical school at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Rabat, in Morocco, Dr. Macwar came to the US to continue his medical education. He completed internship in internal medicine at Southern Illinois University in Springfield then residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Macwar developed an interest in cardiology because he saw the opportunity to make a difference in treating a disease that so highly impacts people around the globe.
During cardiology fellowship at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania, Ryan developed greater interest in advanced cardiac imaging and using the latest and greatest technology to see and diagnose diseases that were previously unable to be detected and treated. His exemplary academic career enabled him to succeed in advanced imaging fellowships at Duke University and Yale University. He is now among very few cardiologists in the country with this advanced imaging training and expertise in all cardiac imaging modalities available today.
No stranger to the Midwest, Dr. Macwar and his wife, Yasmina, moved to Peoria in 2012 when he joined HeartCare Midwest. They soon expanded their family with the birth of their first child. When he is not working, he enjoys sports including tennis, basketball and soccer. When he has more time, he enjoys kayaking and rafting.
Best part of the job:
“The best part is making a different in people’s lives and preserving life.”
