Born in Chicago and raised in the Chicago-land area Syed became interested in cardiac surgery in the fourth grade. When his father underwent open heart surgery, Syed was amazed with the cardiac surgeon who was caring and confident and repeatedly explained everything to his family in great detail. This surgeon was a tremendous influence on Syed's career choice.
Dr. Hussain is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery for the general surgery residency program at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria. He is an active member of the American College of Surgeons, Peripheral Vascular Surgery Society, Society of Clinical Vascular Surgery, American Medical Association, and the Illinois State Medical Society. Dr. Hussain served as an alternate delegate for the House of Delegates meeting for the Illinois State Medical Society. He has participated as an investigator in numerous clinical research trials for minimally invasive vascular devices (carotid stents, AAA/TAA stents, and SFA stents). Dr. Hussain also won the Illinois Robert Patton Research Award for excellence in surgical research.
Syed is married. His wife, Azra, is a clinical pharmacist at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center. Syed and Azra have one son, Sufyan, who was born in February of 2008.
In his spare time, Syed enjoys biking, playing chess, watching movies and reading about history. His favorite history topics are the French Revolution and WWII.
